Last week Debbie and I ventured North to Lake Nacimiento. The 3.5 hour trek flew by as we yakked and enjoyed the mix tape (cd) I created just for the trip–featuring Michael Buble, Shania Twain, Glee soundtrack, Beyonce, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Counting Crows, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Corrine Bailey Rae, Alison Kraus and Tim McGraw.
Originally the lake was designed for irrigation water and flood control as well as recreation. Nacimiento Dam, a 210-foot (64 m) earthfill dam, forms the lake. The dam was completed in 1961, per wikipedia. The many “arms” of Nacimiento make it look like a dragon.
Every time I’ve been to the lake, the water has been really low. This year however, the water level is really high. Crazy high, actually! A season of drenching storms and runoff sent water flowing over the dam’s spillway earlier in the spring, the first time it’s done that since 1983 and the fourth time in its 55-year history per CBS Sacramento.
The reflections were really beautiful in the early morning.
And we had food!
Here is our afternoon snack: brie (with the nasty white rind cut off), pita chips and Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. Very civilized.
Oh, and the ice cream! Thanks to Kelly (!) we discovered the diabolical Late Night Snack Ben N Jerry’s. It’s everything you could possibly want in an ice cream AND MORE! Read it and weep: Fair Trade Certified vanilla ice cream, fudge covered potato chip clusters & a salty caramel swirl.
Between meals, we chilaxed…reading several books, People magazines, watching movies and tv shows about hoarders (kinda like watching a train wreck–you just can’t look away!), napping, manicures, facial masks and hair treatments. I also won several Words With Friends games (you Austin competitors know who you are!)
Lounge lizards you say? Heck yeah! Although we did fit in a daily vigorous walk including steep hills!
The next day, more of the same…
Thanks Debbie! Can’t wait for the next trip.
